MI BARRIO (graphic novel)
by Robert Renteria
as told to Corey Michael Blake
illustrated by Shane Clester
Writers of the Round Table Press/SmarterComics, 2011

"Don't let where you came from dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you become."

These are the words of successful entrepreneur Robert Renteria, who grew up as an infant sleeping in a dresser drawer in one of the poorest ghettos of East L.A. and went on to become a business owner and civic leader. And most recently, he was honored with the prestigious award of the 2010 Chicago Latino Professional of the Year.

Robert likes to say that his book is not the Robert Renteria story, but it’s “Your Story. It’s Our Story.” But, let’s be honest for a moment. Out-of-the-Barrio-to-Success stories are plentiful. Everybody has heard of them; has seen them on TV or in magazines; you might even have one in your family. However, after the 15-minutes of fame, these success stories are just that…stories. You read them, you’re impressed, you move on to the next one.

Robert’s success story doesn’t end with his book, FROM THE BARRIO TO THE BOARDROOM. In fact, that book was just the beginning. Robert turned it into a graphic novel, MI BARRIO, which speaks directly to teenagers in a medium they easily identify with.

MI BARRIO is a brilliantly illustrated novel, reminiscent of the comic books from the 1960s. It’s a quick read; powerful and poignant. It tells more than shows, but still the message comes through loud and clear in 55-pages: that anything is possible with persistence, hard work, heart and soul.

Robert also started a foundation, From the Barrio, to promote education, a sense of pride and accomplishment, and self-esteem within the youth of our communities. His books are now being taught in schools to students all around America and in many communities all around the world.

Through his books and the foundation, Robert has found a way to give back to the community, and to help others achieve the great American / Latino dream. He’s found a way to pay it forward, and we are very glad he did.  Bravo, Robert!♥

Who was your first foundation sponsor? How much did they contribute? What did it take for them to come on board? Was it easier to get sponsor number 2? Why or why not?
Robert Renteria said…
Our first sponsor was a donation to purchase 1,000 Barrio books for a local high school. They came on board because they believed in the message. The donation was given by the Oberweis Foundation. Jim Oberweis welcomed the partnership, he believes in hard work, dedication and education.

Hola Sr.Renteria
Do you rely think one comic book can change the life of a child? I recently purchased your book, I must say it is quite nice the message you are trying to promote, but in all reality we may not all have the same advantages or opportunities that you were able to experience. We all have a story to tell, most of us grow up in the ghetto, experience hardships and deal with the messed up family members and unfortunately not all of us can break this vicious cycle and get caught up in the lifestyle. How do you think your comic can help us? There are not many people that are willing to give young Latinos or ex convicts a chance everyone is always willing and ready to judge.
