CELEBRATING GAY PRIDE WITH 20 LATINO BOOKS



The Latina Book Club celebrates Gay Pride with a magnificent list of books by Latino Authors. This year, Gay Pride is so much more precious given the recent slayings in Orlando.  So we celebrate with anthologies, fiction, historicals, graphic novels, young adult novels and memoirs, etc., all in search of the Latino Queer identity.  Happy Reading!

ANGEL PARK by Roberto F. Santiago (Tincture / Lethe Press) – poems that shout their LGBTQ identity.

FROM MACHO TO MARIPOSA: NEW GAY LATINO FICTION edited by Charles Rice-Gonzalez & Charlie Vazquez (Tincture) – stories from 30 gay Latino authors around the U.S.

GEORGE by Alex Gino (Scholastic Press) – story about transgender teen.

JULIET TAKES A BREATH by Gabby Rivera (Riverdale Ave Books) – gay teen looking for answers from the feminist authority.

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN by Manuel Puig (Vintage) – a classic! Middle-aged homosexual seduces young socialist while in Argentinian prison.  This was a great movie too with the legendary Raύl Juliá.

MARIPOSA CLUB by Rigoberto Gonzalez (Lethe Press) – four gay high school seniors start an LGBT club before graduation as their legacy.

MORE HAPPY THAN NOT by Adam Silvera (SoHo Teen) – grieving gay teen makes a new friend.

NEVER TOO REAL by Carmen Rita (Kensington) –BFFs watch each other’s back in this modern tale, where one in-your-face gay Latina lives life on her own terms.

QUEER BROWN VOICES: PERSONAL NARRATIVES OF LATINA/O LGBT ACTIVISM edited by Uriel Quesada, Letitia Gomez, Salvador Vidal-Ortiz (University of Texas Press) – Essays and interviews of 14 LGBTQ Latina/o activists across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

SPIT AND PASSION by Cristy C. Road (The Feminist Press at CUNY) – graphic novel about a girl who finds being in the closet creative until she is forced to step out.

THE CITY OF PALACES by Michael Nava (University of Wisconsin Press) – historical novel about family and being true to one’s identity.
