HAPPY NEW YEAR! THREE KINGS DAY PARADE PHOTO ALBUM!

The Latina Book Club wishes everyone a Happy New Year and a Happy Three Kings Day! January 6, 2016, was the 39 th annual Three Kings Day Parade sponsored by El Museo del Barrio .  This is my fourth year attending and each year the parade is spectacular, as was the company.  Members of Las Comadres Para Las Americas , of which I am one, gather to attend the parade and then finish with a fabulous lunch at La Fonda restaurant. Julia, Tess, Dora, Maria, Ingrid, Carmen, Clara, Gladys, Nikki & Julie Wednesday was a magical day full of shiny crowns, music, dancing, colorful puppets and live camels! The day was sunny and bright so it was easy to see the smiles and joy on the faces of the kids and adults lined up on 106 Street and Third Avenue; all eager to catch a glimpse of the Baby Jesus, his parents Mary and Joseph and the Three Kings. Aside from the parade, El Museo del Barrio also honored Latinos who have made a contribution to the community....

THREE KINGS DAY PARADE!

ElMuseo del Barrio's 38th Annual Three Kings Day Parade and Celebration went on as planned earlier today, January 6, 2015, despite the snow storm and dropping temperatures.   Joseph and Mary bundled up the baby Jesus, while the three magi gulped hot cups of coffee.   The *Honorary Kings, Madrinas and Padrinos lined up outside the Museum, school graders from the neighborhood gathered with their homemade crowns, while sponsors and radio stations jockeyed for position.   Even Aurora Anaya-Cerda, founder of La Casa Azul Bookstore , and La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered, from the +movie "Book of Life" joined the fiesta. Outside, dozens of men, women and children of all ages gathered on 104th Street and on Third Avenue to watch the parade in all its white glory.  Also, present were members of Las Comadres Para Las Americas (a networking group for Latina women of which I am proud to be a member).   There was a nice "lady" camel bu...

Best known for her memoir, WHEN I WAS PUERTO RICAN, Esmeralda Santiago conquered the crowded events room last night at the 86th Street Barnes and Noble. Esmeralda began her book tour for CONQUISTADORA in Puerto Rico last week. If you missed her last night, not to worry she will be back. Esmeralda will be at the Brooklyn Book Festival on September 18, and at El Museo del Barrio on September 28. For more information on Esmeralda visit her on http://www.esmeraldasantiago.com/ . Below are pictures from last night’s booksigning.  Esmeralda was happy to take pictures with me and my fellow Comadres, as she is a comadre herself.  (For more information on Las Comadres, visit http://www.lascomadres.org/ .) El Barrio Book Club -- next meeting March 9

ATTENTION:   El Barrio's Book Club meeting for February has been cancelled.  Their next meeting will be on Tuesday March 9, 2010. MARCH'S BOOK CLUB MEETING March 9, 2010 at El Museo del Barrio / El Cafe 1230 Fifth Avenue (at 104th Street) 6:30pm - 8:30pm Book of the Month:    WE WERE HERE by Matt de la Pena Book Summary:  The story of one boy and his journey to find himself.  When it happened, Miguel was sent to Juvi. The judge gave him a year in a group home - said he had to write a journal so some counselor could try to figure out how he thinks. The judge had no idea that he actually did Miguel a favor. Ever since it happened, his mom can't even look him in the face. Any home besides his would be a better place to live. But Miguel didn't bet on meeting Dondell or Mong or any of what happened after they broke out. He only thought about Mexico and and getting to the border where he could start over. Forget his mom. Forget his brother....
