THE LATINA BOOK CLUB

The Latina Book Club is proud to release its 6 th Annual Books of the Year List. We are always happy to discover new Latinx authors like Ingrid Rojas Contreras, whose FRUIT OF THE DRUNKEN TREE made a big debut in English and Spanish.   There are also new books from favorite authors like Luis Alberto Urrea’s new THE HOUSE OF THE BROKEN ANGELS or Torrey Maldonado’s TIGHT.     We were also happy to discover Latinx authors in all genres --- paranormals, thrillers, mysteries, romances, young adult books, etc.   Please review this list of Books of the Year. We guarantee that you’ll find a good book for kids of all ages. For centuries books have been “challenged.”  In some cases the books were stored away out of sight, out of mind; in worse cases, they were burned and lost forever.  Even today, books are “banned” for all sorts of reasons – violence, foul language, portrayals of abuse/drugs/alcoholism, religious points of view, sexual content, etc., etc., etc.  Believe it or not, even The Holy Bible was banned at one point for sexual content and violence.  No wonder it’s the number one bestselling book every year. So to Celebrate Banned Book Week (Sept 25 – Oct 1) and to Celebrate Our Right to Read, here are 15 “notorious” Latino Books that have been banned at one time or another for all sorts of reasons.  We encourage you to add them all to your Library and read them in public.  Happy Reading!    T he Latina Book Club loves libraries. Libraries are magical places full of miles and miles of wondrous books that transported readers of all ages to different cities, countries, even galaxies. Libraries are great places to visit and see science exhibits and art shows, and play computer games. But, best of all, readers can borrow books from their local library – dozens of books, hundreds of books – and take them home to read at their own pace. This Summer, kids of all ages can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge offered by the New York Public Libraries in all boroughs. The challenge is to read every day. Whether it’s a fiction novel, memoir, comic book, how to book or DIY project, read at least 20-minutes each day.  Readers can also read in all languages – English, Spanish, Chinese, French, et al.  There are even braille and talking books for the blind.  For more information, visit the NYPL program by clicking here . ...
